Jaguar Land Rover begins city tests of its autonomous vehicles
The consortium of which Jaguar Land Rover is a member is testing its autonomous driving technology on the streets of the city of Coventry with real traffic

The race to be the first to have a fully autonomous car continues unstoppably. The major brands are pushing hard to achieve one of these vehicles, one that is fully functional and offers the most complete experience to the user. In the United Kingdom, one of those brands is Jaguar Land Rover, which has begun the first tests with its autonomous cars in real traffic conditions.
The city of Coventry has thus become one of the 12 cities around the world being used as a real-world setting for testing these kinds of technologies. Jaguar Land Rover is part of UK Autodrive, one of the three major consortia in the United Kingdom testing autonomous and semi-autonomous driving technology, and these tests will allow it to try them out in real traffic situations.

The autonomous Jaguar Land Rover cars taking part in these tests are connected to each other and to infrastructure systems, such as traffic lights. In this way, they are managing to reproduce in daily autonomous traffic the same driving behaviours a human would display, in order to iron out the various complications that can arise on a typical journey.

With these systems, Jaguar Land Rover will offer its users assisted driving, the nearest in time, as well as fully autonomous driving, for which many years of testing, experimentation and work still remain. The UK Autodrive project has a budget of 20 million pounds and for several months has carried out tests in closed, controlled environments. Now come the tests on the city streets, which will continue throughout 2018 while they gather all the data needed to improve its performance.
