Learn how to measure your tyre pressure properly

Checking tyre pressure is one of the most important tasks that should be carried out regularly on your vehicle, yet it is also one of the most overlooked.

Tyres are, if anything, the most important part of a vehicle. After all, they are the only components in contact with the road and the surface on which the car is driven. They therefore have a direct impact on driving safety.

Failing to monitor tyre pressure or ignoring the manufacturer’s advice for your model can cause tyre deformation, as well as premature wear. For this reason, it is highly recommended to check tyre pressure at least once a month, including the spare wheel.

So, what is the right pressure for your tyre? It is simple: every model has a recommended pressure set by the manufacturer. You will usually find this information on the fuel flap or in your car’s handbook, although today it is easier to use Google to find the information you need directly in the brand’s official online manual.

The effects of incorrect pressure

The tyre heats up sooner if the pressure is not correct, which accelerates wear, increases the risk of a tyre coming off the rim, and makes aquaplaning more likely. And of course, as a final note, it increases fuel consumption.

The consequences of driving with incorrect pressure can persist even after the problem has been corrected, for example if the tyre has become excessively worn or deformed.

Overinflating is not recommended either, as it brings its own problems. Greater wear along the centre of the tread, irregularities in the road surface and poorer grip will all take their toll, so be very careful.

Are petrol station pressure gauges reliable?

Yes and no. The best approach is to check pressures with at least two different gauges to determine whether the one you regularly use is properly calibrated.
Our best advice in this case is to buy a pocket pressure gauge and always keep it in the vehicle. They cost between 10 and 30 euros. Here is a good offer from amazon.es: Pressure gauge.

How to measure tyre pressure

  1. Measure tyre pressure when the tyres are cold. It is important to make sure of this.
  2. Measure tyre pressure with 1 or 2 gauges to be sure. Almost all petrol stations have one you can use.
  3. Check tyre pressures before every long journey.
  4. Adjust the pressure to the vehicle’s load: when the car is loaded, it is always advisable to add a little more pressure, although this information is also available in your model’s handbook.

  5. Don’t forget to check the spare wheel’s pressure.
  6. Don’t lose the valve caps when adjusting tyre pressure; keep them somewhere safe at all times.
