Madness or genius? Two terms that could describe this off-road Mazda MX-5 (NA) named Rallyata

The automotive world has evolved throughout history , starting from the genius and madness of some of the most ingenious manufacturers. However, on certain occasions, it is also the users themselves who decide to go one step further and create something unique and unimaginable. This has happened with this small Mazda MX-5 NA, whose owner, Caleb Sandlund, has decided to give the Japanese sports car an approach never applied before. With this premise, the young American decided to carry out this genius -or madness- and create the first Mazda MX-5 with off-road capabilities.

The process has not been simple, but Caleb has successfully managed to have in his garage a sports car capable of tackling the most adverse terrain. To do this, the young YouTuber has not only applied significant aesthetic changes, but also mechanical ones, affecting the engine, suspension, steering and numerous components that required improvement in a car whose original design was not made for tackling the mountain without restrictions.

Originally, this small Mazda MX-5 housed under its bonnet a naturally aspirated 1.8 engine capable of producing 130 CV of power and 157 Nm of torque. However, Caleb has decided to strip the small Japanese car of its naturally aspirated status and endow it with a supercharger, thus allowing the MX-5 to reach considerably higher, though unknown, power. At the same time, the changes applied are in line with the new power level and its new ability to leave the asphalt behind.

Named Rallyata -a combination of Rally and Miata- this Mazda MX-5 features a setup worthy of admiration. In the attached video, we can see a summary of the work and time Caleb has dedicated to this unusual project, which includes numerous components that accentuate its capabilities to not only tackle winding roads.

One of the first modifications carried out was to the suspension, which was replaced with a reinforced one to handle any type of terrain through a greater degree of stiffness and considerable ground clearance. At the same time, specific off-road tyres were fitted along with several modifications to widen the bodywork.

Other details such as the roof lights, the military green colour or various interior components help reinforce that adventurous spirit. Without a doubt, Caleb has managed to give the iconic Mazda MX-5 a unique and very special attitude and, although some may call this young American crazy -or genius- his creations leave no one indifferent.
