Madrid Police expands its fleet with new eco cars
Madrid’s Municipal Police increases its fleet of electrified cars with more than 50 new vehicles
The Madrid Municipal Police is adding new, greener cars to its ranks, in line with the requirements that the city council led by Manuela Carmena sets for anyone wishing to drive in the capital, especially if they want to enter Madrid Central, also known as the “central almond”.
Either way, updating Spain’s vehicle fleet, both of public bodies and private cars, is a priority, and the acquisition of more sustainable cars in these new purchases shows that the transition to electrified cars is unstoppable.
Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, Madrid Police’s new SUV
Given that the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is a crossover offering a homologated electric-mode range of up to 54 km, the local police will be able to patrol Madrid’s streets with the blue badge, the CERO label which currently grants access to the most traffic-restricted areas.
Indeed, during its road test, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV demonstrated its versatility, which will surely provide the same level of adaptability to the officers’ daily duties for those who use this plug-in hybrid SUV patrolling the city of Madrid.
Hybrid SUVs and compacts for patrolling Madrid
And while SUVs are the fashionable cars, saloons and estates remain essential both for the health of the automotive industry and for the country’s police and security forces.
This is also shown by the fifty or so new Toyota Prius + for the Madrid Municipal Police.
At a presentation of this fleet of full hybrid cars, great emphasis was placed on the care taken in incorporating eco-friendly vehicles. So much so that these police cars display the ECO label, since their electric-mode range does not reach the minimum of over 40 km set by the DGT.
Either way, the new Toyota Prius + will be assigned to surveillance and protection duties across the streets and neighbourhoods of the capital. So, despite having a shorter electric range than, for example, the police’s new Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, they will improve air quality, both in terms of gas emissions and noise, making public roads more comfortable for residents and visitors to Madrid.
