This is what the interior of the new Volkswagen Golf of eighth generation will look like

Volkswagen took advantage of the Annual General Meeting of shareholders to show the interior of the new Volkswagen Golf 2020. The eighth generation of the legendary compact from the German brand will radically depart from its predecessor. The new Volkswagen Golf now adopts a minimalist interior that does away with a traditional centre console.

This is a major stylistic change, and it seems most of the controls will be integrated into an independent infotainment system. Some people may reject this decision, but Volkswagen has cleverly integrated the dual-zone climate controls into a slim touch panel at the base of the screen. There is also a third panel between the climate controls, which could be used to adjust the volume of the audio system.

On the left, there is a group of digital instruments that is connected to the infotainment system through a glossy black surround with a wave-like design. The cluster looks fairly basic, but it displays a large speedometer and a tachometer.

Below the infotainment system are rectangular air vents with metal trim. This design curves around the dashboard and is repeated on the passenger side. We can also see a new steering wheel and evolved door panels with aluminium accents. The Volkswagen Golf VIII also features a stepped top dashboard and five dedicated buttons between the two central air outlets.

The screens will sit at practically the same height, which will add an extra measure of safety, as the driver will spend little time taking their eyes off the road.

Volkswagen Golf VIII, still camouflaged

The prototype of this eighth generation is still heavily camouflaged, but that does not stop speculation about its design. Some sources suggest it will be instantly recognisable thanks to very distinctive front bumpers; it will feature a new grille and a new lighting system. In addition, its bonnet will have a more sculpted design, a larger spoiler and a much sportier bumper.

The spotted concept belongs to the most affordable version of the model, as the wheels are not large and it is fitted with a manual gearbox. All of this suggests that the digital instrumentation will be an extra available on the higher trim levels. The images of the Volkswagen Golf VIII were taken in the United States. The new compacts from Volkswagen were accompanied by several concepts of Audi.

The spy images reveal the new proportions of the model. It has a lower height and a longer wheelbase. This stretches the silhouette and gives a sense of greater space, while also offering a more elegant and sporty stance than its predecessor.

The German brand will unveil the new member of its family next October and has hinted that “once again, the new Volkswagen Golf will set the benchmark in the compact class”. The manufacturer has also confirmed some of the engines with which the model will be offered. The Volkswagen Golf 2020 will be available with petrol, diesel and CNG variants. Versions mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrids with a range of up to 80 kilometres will also reach the market.

Although it will be presented in October, the first units will not begin arriving at dealerships in Germany until the following February.

Volkswagen Golf 2020, with Digital Cockpit 3D

At the recent CES in Las Vegas, Volkswagen presented the Digital Cockpit 3D, and now the future Volkswagen Golf will be equipped with it. It will be built on the modular MQB platform, the same one used by the Seat León and the Audi A3. It will offer greater boot capacity, which could reach 400 litres, and weigh around 50 kilograms less.
