McLaren MP4-12C triumphs on Top Gear

As we have seen on many occasions, if the McLaren MP4-12C’s performance has been characterised lately, it is precisely because of something as simple as failing to live up to everything that was promised at the start.

As you will recall, many things were said after its presentation, the most notable being that the new McLaren was fundamentally superior in performance to its rivals, something that the first tests clearly showed was not the case. In its favour, it must be said that in almost all of them it could be seen suffering greatly in a straight line.

Well then, to refute everything said so far, we have the lads from Top Gear, Jeremy Clarkson and Stig at the helm, controversial characters who set out to debate everything said about the English supercar thanks to figures such as a lap time of just 1:16.2 around the Top Gear circuit.

An incredible time, especially considering that, for example, the radical Ariel Atom V8 set 1:15.1, while direct rivals (and not so direct ones) such as the Bugatti Veyron managed 1:16.8, the Gumper Apollo (1:17.1) or the Ferrari 458 Italia (1:19.1). As you can see, a time that places the English supercar in a commendable second place.

Now, if all the prestigious publications and programmes speak of a technologically stunning vehicle whose performance leaves something to be desired compared with rivals such as the Ferrari 458 Italia, will Top Gear be right, and have we been fooled like small children? Has Jeremy Clarkson’s love of English vehicles led him to this extreme?
