McLaren on demand: the plan is to build two or three custom cars per year

McLaren Special Operations is ready to take on the creation of two or three custom vehicles each year, offering an exclusive model to its clients

There are people who can afford a supercar, one of those impressive cars that can become extremely striking with just a few personalised details. But even these cars may fall short of what one of their owners expects. So major brands strive to offer the ultimate in exclusivity, creating fully customised models for their clients.

These models, although based on the brand’s cars, are completely reworked, and the resulting cars bear little resemblance to the car they were originally built on. This kind of work is carried out by the brand’s special divisions, which devote practically all their time to developing these one-off models found nowhere else in the world.

McLaren has just announced that it will expand its McLaren Special Operations department so it can build more models of this kind. Custom products are one of the incentives it offers its most exclusive clients (a nice way of saying wealthier clients), and that is why it wants to make it easier to get one of these products.

According to McLaren managers, the British specialists can build one of these cars within 18-24 months, and they offer clients the option of keeping their car, with its owner’s tastes and decorative quirks, public or private, protecting the design until the owner decides to unveil it.

These cars can even serve as a testbed for elements that later move into production models, to strengthen the almost exclusive style of the legendary brand. The only known vehicle of this kind is the X-1, built in 2012 and based on the McLaren 12C. This model featured new body panels and a pair of hydraulic covers for the rear wheels, as you can see in the image gallery of this custom model. We hope that with this initiative we will see more cars in this style.
