Melkus RS 2000: a Volkswagen or a Opel wearing the skin of a sports car
Melkus Sportwagen is a German coachbuilder that sells the Melkus RS 2000, a small sports car that uses two-litre turbo engines of Volkswagen or Opel.

Few coachbuilders remain in Europe, although Germany seems to be a garden of Eden for them. With stretches of autobahn with no speed limit, there are cars for every budget when choosing a sports car. Among them, Melkus Sportwagen gives us a choice of three variants of its Melkus RS 2000, ranging from 200 to 280 horsepower.
The first thing that catches the eye is that the car is covered in 6 layers of special paint, which make the surface of its bodywork feel as smooth as the touch of a piano. There are 18 colours to choose from, so you wouldn’t have to settle for just black. However, the Melkus RS2000 also has other details that are not just for show, but for getting the most out of the driving experience.

Among the existing variants, the entry-level one is the RS2000 “plain”, with 300 horsepower and a top speed of 250 km/h; the RS200 GT, with 325 horsepower and a top speed of 270, culminating in the RS 2000 GTS, with almost 375 horsepower and 300 km/h. Besides turning heads on the autobahn, the Melkus certainly commands respect with its gullwing doors and its more than generous rear spoiler, despite a size that edges towards compact.
The price of these sports cars is within what we imagined and even more: 150,000 euros. At this rate, it seems impossible for Melkus to be more than a curiosity on the market, when a Boxster sold in Spain costs around 54,000 euros.
