Mercedes-AMG G63 50th Anniversary, a limited edition for Japan
AMG continues the celebrations for its 50th anniversary and presents a new limited edition, this time based on the Mercedes-AMG G63, but available only in Japan

Mercedes-Benz’s high-performance division, AMG, has high hopes for 2017, and it’s no wonder, since 50 years don’t come around every day. In February, they announced a first batch of limited editions that will reach markets around the world, based on the Mercedes-AMG GT C Roadster Edition 50, the Mercedes-AMG C63 and the Mercedes-AMG C43.
Now AMG announces yet another special edition to keep the birthday party going, but this edition is even more special than those mentioned above, since only 50 units will be built and they will be sold in just one country: Japan. The land of the rising sun will be the only privileged one to have this Mercedes-AMG G63 50th Anniversary on its roads, but beware, as expected it is not cheap: 22 million yen is its price, which translates to roughly 178,000 euros.
Is it really special enough to be worth that money? Well, first we must note that it is the AMG version of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, a model powered by a 5,500 cc twin-turbo V8 petrol engine that delivers a healthy output of 571 CV. All this power is sent to all four wheels thanks to permanent four-wheel drive, and is linked to the seven-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC automatic gearbox.

Beyond this point, everything else we find is cosmetic modifications. Since the Mercedes-AMG already comes with an exterior styling kit, the differences in this area lie simply in the colour combination, quite a successful one by the way, of Mauritius Blue for the bodywork and black for the wheel arches, front and rear bumpers, mirror housings, the roof and the part of the cover that houses the spare wheel. All of this is topped off with 20-inch 5-spoke wheels, also in black.
Finally, for the interior, the changes centre on the colours available for the upholstery. There will be four, consisting of an all-black leather interior, a second that combines black with light brown, a third that combines black with dark brown and, lastly, a fourth combination of black and cream leather. All the upholstery will feature Mauritius Blue as a contrast in the stitching.
