Mercedes-Benz: 120 years on the market making a difference
In 1900, Daimler’s cars adopted the name Mercedes in honour of the daughter of Emil Jellinek, an Austrian entrepreneur linked to the company.

Mercedes is a women’s name of clear Spanish origin. But it is also a name associated with Germany, because it is one of the most important brands in the European automotive industry. Luxury, quality, prestige and many other qualities that make it one of the most sought-after and beloved on the international market. Mercedes-Benz has turned 120 years old and its name has a history starring, of course, a woman.
In 1900 the company Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft decided to name all its cars after the daughter of Emil Jellinek. This Austrian entrepreneur dealt in the brand’s vehicles and entered them in motor racing competitions. He was so important to the brand that from that moment on all of them came to be called Mercedes. And so the first Mercedes, the Mercedes 35 PS, hit the track in 1901.

This model featured a series of technological innovations that made it an outstanding car for its time. In fact, this model is considered the first prototype of the modern car, and the whole Mercedes empire was built upon it, helping to develop the automobile in Europe. The name Mercedes Jellinek appeared on the radiators of the various cars from that moment on, until Daimler merged with Benz and the brand came to be called Mercedes-Benz.

From 1926 onwards the name was changed and the reign of Mercedes-Benz among German luxury cars began, seeking to combine comfort with the most advanced automotive technology. Over all this time, Mercedes-Benz cars have become something more than just a car and have come to be synonymous with quality and prestige around the world.
With an origin closely tied to the women of the founding family, Mercedes has wanted to keep engaging women buyers, who are important to the company. Since 1915 the She’s Mercedes programme has been created, connecting with them and offering them a link to the brand’s tradition.
This versatility of the brand allows it to be among the ten most important brands in the world, according to the Best Global Brands 2019 ranking by the American company Interbrand.
