Mercedes-Benz and The Weekend team up to make the best car ad of the year

Mercedes-Benz and The Weekend have joined forces to create what could be the best car ad of the year. The truth is they have a tough job, because Audi has also released an ad that has a good chance of taking the title.

Mercedes-Benz and Canadian singer The Weeknd have teamed up to promote the Mercedes-Benz EQC 2020 crossover, scheduled to go on sale early next year at an approximate price of 70,000 euros.

The ad was merged with the artist’s new single “Blinding Lights,” which was released on November 29. In fact, this Mercedes-Benz EQC advert is both a music video and a commercial for the fully electric crossover.

What makes it special, however, apart from the soundtrack, is the fact that Mercedes-Benz went further, making the clip more than just the Mercedes-Benz EQC: they achieved this by bringing out several iconic models, creating dynamic and meaningful moments with them on camera while showcasing a range of different eras.

Are we looking at the best car ad of the year?

Speaking of really well-made car ads, we could argue that “Blinding Lights” by Mercedes-Benz and The Weeknd is on a par with “Avant Story” by Audi for the number one car ad of the year. Both rely heavily on a dynamic, moving soundtrack, and both feature iconic models from the past.

Unlike the Audi ad, which lasted 6 minutes and 40 seconds, “Blinding Lights” lasts only 2 minutes and 20 seconds in terms of on-screen action. The remaining minute or so is for the song to actually conclude, hence the feel of a music video of the clip.

As for the Mercedes-Benz EQC, it undercuts the Tesla Model X by about 15,000 euros and will be available in three trim levels: Progressive, Premium and Avantgarde. All versions will be powered by an 80 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, feeding the front and rear electric motors a combined output of 408 CV and 760 Nm of torque, achieving 0-100 km/h in 4.8 seconds.

What is the Mercedes-Benz EQC like?

The new Mercedes-Benz EQC has a very understated look, with no flashy details that give away its 100% electric nature. The front is the most novel part, with a huge black grille ending in sharp headlights with a hook-shaped light signature. Linking them is an LED light bar running across the front from headlight to headlight, which gives it a very distinctive look.

From there on, everything we see is very discreet. Its rounded silhouette recalls the GLC, although the optional 20-inch wheels with very flat designs stand out to improve aerodynamics. The rear has shapes similar to its conventional sibling, although the new SUV has succumbed to the fashion for a continuous light bar. Looking at the lower part of the bumper, we realise this is an electric car, as the absence of exhaust outlets gives it away. Is that why Mercedes-Benz and The Weeknd have teamed up?
