Mercedes-Benz E-Class 2020: an update to stay the benchmark
The Mercedes-Benz E-Class 2020 has received an update to keep it fresh and to take on its rivals
After last Friday’s news that everyone was expecting, the cancellation of the Geneva Motor Show due to the coronavirus, brands have decided to hold a virtual event while respecting the launch dates they had already set.
Mercedes-Benz has been one of them, so they have kept their promise to show the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class 2020. It is not a new generation, but a facelift to keep competing with its two main rivals: the Audi A6 and the BMW 5 Series.
In terms of styling, there are fairly subtle changes that don’t amount to a revolution but give the whole car a fresher look. As a result, we find new bumpers and new headlights that adopt the design features of the brand’s latest models. In addition, the number of chrome elements has increased and the grille also has a new design.
This update affects all body configurations available in the range, so it will apply to both the Saloon and the Estate. Not only that, but the Mercedes-Benz E-Class 2020 will also keep the All-Terrain version, the crossover variant of the Teutonic saloon.
The Mercedes-Benz E-Class All-Terrain 2020 now has a more adventurous look thanks to its greater amount of plastic cladding, which makes it resemble its SUV siblings in the range more closely. As is usual with this kind of update, the facelift introduces new wheel designs and new colour options, specifically three: hightech silver, graphite grey and mojave silver.
The cabin is also updated
What catches our attention most when looking at the first images of the interior of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class 2020 is the new three-spoke steering wheel. As a novelty, it features a smart ring that detects when the driver takes their hands off it and warns them.
Of course, we will have the MBUX infotainment system, which comes standard with two 10.25-inch screens. However, optionally we can choose 12.3-inch ones.
Beyond that, the differences are minimal, as we will find the same design with the characteristic centre console and the four rounded air vents, the good materials and the generous interior space.
One of the giant strides of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class 2020 is its available technology, as it will have a huge array of automated systems: parking assistance, Stop&Go cruise control, lane-keeping system, braking assistant… It will also have cameras on all its sides to provide a 360º view, so the new saloon from the brand of the star becomes one of the benchmarks in this respect.
The Mercedes E-Class 2020 introduces more efficient engines
With the wave of electrified models we are receiving this year, the range of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class 2020 could not be left behind, so it will have no fewer than seven plug-in hybrid versions across all body configurations. With these, it will earn the DGT Zero Emissions label.
Not only that, but it will also have a new engine equipped with 48V Mild Hybrid technology. This one develops 268 CV and another 20 from the electric part, also achieving all the advantages of the DGT ECO label.
We will have to wait until summer to see it at the dealerships of the brand of the star. We also don’t know the price of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class 2020, but considering that the pre-facelift model starts at 52,500 euros, we assume prices won’t vary much.
