Mercedes-Benz improves route planning in its electric vehicles through an OTA update

The user experience of the Mercedes-Benz MBUX system takes a significant leap with this 2.6 update, with major improvements that we detail below.

Mercedes-Benz has recently announced the MBUX 2.6 software update, which will be delivered over the air (OTA) to more than two million vehicles of the brand worldwide. This update, available for both electric and combustion models, introduces innovative features that optimize the driving experience; but it is especially interesting for electric models, as it adds a new route planner that includes the stops needed to recharge.

With the new “Real-Time Alternative Routes” function, the system is now capable of simultaneously calculating several routes to the destination, incorporating charging stops as intermediate points.

Route planning takes a step up

Unlike previous versions, which only offered one initial route, this update considers factors such as distance, traffic and estimated charging times, adjusting the route in real time. This new function is available on electric models with the second generation of MBUX, such as the electric G-Class, EQS, EQS SUV, EQE, EQE SUV, EQA and EQB (the latter from the 2023/2 model onward).

For electric vehicles with off-road capabilities, such as the G-Class, EQS SUV and EQE SUV, the “Offroad Track” function is also introduced. It is accessible through an application available for iOS and Android mobile devices, and also through a paid digital add-on for the vehicle. This new function allows users to record, share and explore off-road routes created by other users.

It is also worth noting that with a smartphone mounted on the windshield, it will now be possible to record videos of the off-road journeys, while the vehicle logs data such as inclination angles, speed, altitude and GPS location. Although we already know this new function will be available as an option, what we still don’t know at this point is its price.

Not a single detail escapes you

The novelties brought by this MBUX 2.6 software update don’t end here, however. Another significant improvement is the incorporation of Google Satellite View into the navigation screen, available for all electric and combustion models with second- or third-generation MBUX. According to the manufacturer, this high-quality satellite view makes orientation easier, especially in rural areas with few landmarks, offering a more intuitive visual experience.

Finally, it should be noted that at the end of last year, Mercedes-Benz released a free update that included ChatGPT for vehicles with the first generation of MBUX. This artificial intelligence assistant, which uses Microsoft Bing to answer questions based on up-to-date knowledge, now reaches more vehicles after voice recognition usage increased by 600 percent in the models that already had it, according to the manufacturer, thanks to its ability to generate natural responses.

“With MBUX 2.6, we offer innovative features that enrich the digital in-car experience. From navigation improvements to the voice assistant, our commitment is to keep cars up to date and modern after purchase.”
