Mercedes-Benz will renew the G-Class in 2017

G-Class 1

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class is one of the models that turns the most heads wherever it goes. 35 years with a unique and iconic style that, one way or another, the brand has managed to keep almost intact to this day.

The German firm, however, has been preparing what will probably be the biggest renewal this model has undergone in its long history.

2017 is the year in which Mercedes-Benz plans to launch a major update of its “Geländewagen”, in which aspects that until now have been secondary will take centre stage, such as easier driving, less weight and more efficient, more enjoyable engines.

However, some concepts will remain unchanged, such as its off-road capability and its design, which will remain fully recognisable wherever it goes. The front suspension is expected to be completely renewed, thereby improving stability at high speeds. Interior space is also one of the details the German firm wants to improve, since the current one, despite its “square” cabin, has room for improvement.

The powertrains and transmissions will also be updated thanks to the arrival of new diesel and petrol engines, which will allow the G-Class to improve its refinement, performance and consumption. In this way, a new generation of 6-cylinder inline diesel engines is expected – they will also be fitted to the E-Class – capable of reaching 300 CV. In petrol versions, the power outputs could exceed 360 CV.

For both diesel and petrol engines, the adoption of the new 9-speed automatic gearbox (9G-Tronic) is more than likely, which will result in a significant improvement in consumption and greater comfort. Despite all the expected changes, the G-Class will keep its internal designation, which is currently W463.
