Mercedes EQ A: the next rival of the Tesla Model 3

The German brand’s electric compact will be presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show, and the final version could offer a battery of about 60 kWh.

The Frankfurt Motor Show will serve to introduce one of the first electric vehicles of Mercedes’s EQ family. The so-called EQ A, an electric compact with which the Bavarian firm intends to kick off one of the most anticipated ranges in the industry, will be presented at the German show as a prototype, and we already have the first teaser video that reveals part of its look.

The video shows that the EQ A will have a striking design on its front grille, where the brand’s logo stands out alongside several lighting lines that give the vehicle a very modern aesthetic. The images also confirm that the electric compact will offer interesting full LED lights on the rear lamps and that the front bonnet will be finished in black.

When will Mercedes’s first electric car reach the market?

We will have to wait until late 2019 or early 2020 to see the final version of the Mercedes EQ A, that is, the model will reach the market 6 or 7 years late compared with its main rival, the BMW i3, although we should not forget the best-seller from Tesla, the Model 3.

It could have around 205 CV and a range close to 400 kilometres

For the moment there is still no official data on the EQ A, except that it will be built on the brand’s new electric vehicle platform, MEA. According to rumours, the electric compact will fit a single electric motor driving the front wheels with about 150 kW (205 CV). For its part, the battery could offer about 60 kWh of capacity, which would allow the vehicle to travel about 400 kilometres of range.

Its price will be almost 10,000 euros higher than that of a BMW i3

The price of the Mercedes EQ A is estimated to be around 40,000 euros, a much higher cost than a BMW i3 (about 8,000 euros less) and slightly above that of the Tesla Model 3 (about 2,000 euros more than the standard version).

In principle, the EQ A will be the first vehicle of Mercedes’s new family of electric cars to roll off the production lines. Mercedes’s plans include launching up to 10 new electric vehicles by 2025.
