Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV: extreme luxury at the cost of some range

The range figure published by the EPA for this premium SUV is close to, but slightly below, that of its sibling, the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV

The United States Environmental Protection Agency, popularly known by its acronym EPA, has just released the results of its consumption and range tests on this luxury electric SUV from the German manufacturer, with fairly satisfactory results.

According to this agency, the Mercedes-Maybach EQS 680 4Matic SUV with 21-inch wheels offers a range of 280 miles -450 km-. That is only 1.8 percent less than the top-of-the-range version of the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV, the 580 4Matic, whose EPA range is 285 miles -458 km- also with 21-inch wheels in this case. The most affordable version of the EQS SUV, the 450+ with rear-wheel drive and available only with 20-inch wheels, offers a somewhat higher range according to this same agency, reaching 305 miles -490 km-. That is 40 kilometers more.

Mercedes Maybach Eqs Suv Interior

The Mercedes-Maybach EQS 680 4Matic SUV has two electric motors that deliver a combined output of 484 kW and give it all-wheel drive. This premium version of the German manufacturer’s electric SUV uses the same battery pack as the rest of the EQS versions with a capacity of 108.4 kWh.

Energy consumption

Besides range, the EPA has also disclosed data on this model’s efficiency. According to the agency, its energy consumption is 442 Wh per mile driven. That is 1.1 percent more than the top-of-the-range EQS SUV 580 4Matic, whose consumption stands at 438 Wh per mile driven. Enjoying the extreme luxury of the Mercedes-Maybach EQS 680 4Matic SUV therefore comes at the price of some range, as a result of slightly higher energy consumption per mile driven. Still, the difference is so small that it seems a more than acceptable price to pay for the vast majority of customers this type of vehicle is aimed at.

Mercedes Maybach Eqs Suv Side

Anyone interested in adding a Mercedes-Maybach EQS 680 4Matic SUV to their garage will have to pay at least $179,900 in the United States. That figure will rise substantially depending on the equipment selected. Opting for the top-of-the-range version of this electric SUV will therefore mean paying an extra $53,950 over the EQS 580 4Matic SUV, whose price in this same market starts at $125,950.
