Mercedes prepares a mini-CLS

Due to the success achieved with the CLS, Mercedes-Benz has decided to extend its four-door coupé-saloon concept to lower categories. Taking as a reference the main lines of the F800 concept (model shown in the image), seen at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show, in 2014 we will have the opportunity to enjoy a mini-CLS.

The platform on which the hypothetical mini-CLS will be built will be the so-called MFA, the same one that the next generations of the A-Class and B-Class will use. For this reason some claim that the final name of the new coupé will be BLS (e.g., worldcarfans). If so, Mercedes-Benz could face a conflict with Cadillac (see Cadillac BLS).

The BLS will be positioned below the recently presented C-Class Coupé. It will be an attraction to win over and retain new and younger customers. To that end it will feature a bold, eye-catching design that will clearly set it apart from the rest of the Mercedes-Benz range.

There is no information about the engines it will use, but the range is expected to include turbocharged petrol engines of 1.4 and 1.8 litres sourced from Renault. The French brand will also make a 1.6-litre diesel available to Mercedes. The top-of-the-range versions will feature engines of Mercedes origin, probably a 2.0-litre petrol and a 2.2-litre diesel producing 200 CV and 170 CV respectively.

Power will reach the front wheels through a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic. The MFA platform is configured to accommodate alternative propulsion systems, so a hybrid or electric version is possible.
