Road safety is one of the priorities of car manufacturers, and they offer more and more solutions so that users can drive more safely and with fewer risks. Among these safety systems, connectivity seems set to be one of the features that will be used most within a few years. Some brands, on the other hand, already seem eager to try connecting cars to traffic signals and are about to integrate them into their models.

Audi is preparing the introduction of a system that will help drivers recognise and receive warnings about the traffic lights in some cities. This system is called Traffic light information and will be able to connect with traffic lights, so that they can transmit to the car data on the light cycle, allowing the driver to know when each of the traffic lights on their way will turn red.

The system connects to each city’s traffic control centre thanks to the car’s LTE connectivity. The information is received in real time and is shown on the instrument panel and the head-up display, where the driver can see which light is active at the traffic lights and how much time remains in each cycle.

This system will be installed on selected models, not on all of them. Nor will it be active in every city in the United States, the country where the system will begin to be tested this autumn and throughout 2017. The list of cities where the system can be used is not known, nor are the models that will initially be equipped with it.

Audi’s intention with this is to begin a complete integration of the car with the infrastructure, so that the car is ultimately fully integrated with its surroundings. At first it will be quite limited, but it can later be incorporated into other models, in addition to starting to work with more systems of this type to make driving safer.
