CNG is one of the fuels with the best prospects for the future and should be used by more consumers, according to the conclusion of the 1st Natural Gas in Transport Congress, held in Madrid.

According to data provided by Gas Natural Fenosa, which hosted the 1st Natural Gas in Transport Congress this Wednesday at its Madrid headquarters, Spain has 3,500 vehicles running on natural gas as fuel, and there are also 26 towns that already have gas filling stations.

These figures were presented as a way to boost the development and use of CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) in our country, which still has few refuelling points and few vehicles powered by this fuel.

The majority of these vehicles are heavy urban vehicles, used for refuse collection or passenger buses. Their use needs to extend to private vehicles as well, which have only very recently begun to adopt it, together with various brands offering specific gas models. Worldwide, 14 million gas vehicles are on the road, only a very small share of which are in Spain.

CNG is one of the cleanest and cheapest fuels available. It is estimated that using gas reduces nitrogen oxide and particulate matter emissions by more than 85%, and that savings of up to 30% compared with diesel and 50% compared with petrol can be achieved when refuelling. Why gas has not enjoyed the same uptake in our country as other fuels remains a mystery still to be solved.
