New spy photos of the BMW 1 Series 2012

These are the best spy photos so far of the upcoming BMW 1 Series (internal code F20). Many details can be clearly seen, especially inside, but let’s start by analysing the external bodywork.

The front bumper has a new design, of which the lower part particularly stands out, with a styling treatment very different from the current generation. The headlights and front grille sit a little higher. Don’t be fooled by the lines outlining the lights, because they are designed to mislead. Another important detail visible in the photos is the integration of side indicators in each of the mirrors (it will be the first BMW to feature them this way).

The messy interior camouflage reveals its main parts: the steering wheel, the instrument cluster and the dashboard. The steering wheel and the instrument cluster dials have red trim, and it is not yet known whether this will be standard equipment or part of an optional sport pack (the latter being the most likely). From the dashboard you can see the general layout of all the controls, as well as a slight angling of the centre console towards the driver.

The specific unit in the pictures, which seems to be a prototype in the final stage of development, has a 2.0-litre diesel engine with stop/start technology and an 8-speed automatic gearbox. All of this is known from the sticker on the dashboard, which reads N47D20.

The second generation of the 1 Series is expected to make its world debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September of this year. The coupé bodystyle will arrive a year later, while the M versions are due around 2013/2014. It is all still a long way off.
