NIU announces the commercialisation of its RQi electric motorcycle in Europe

After a number of setbacks that prevented its market launch over the last few years, NIU finally announces the imminent availability of its RQi electric motorcycle in Europe

Motorcycling and electric mobility enthusiasts have reason to celebrate. Four years after Chinese manufacturer NIU announced its intention to launch the RQi electric motorcycle at CES 2020 in Las Vegas, the project is finally becoming a reality, and it will do so precisely in the European market. NIU promises that the RQi will begin reaching the brand’s sales points in Europe during the first quarter of this new year that has just begun.

Available in four colours to choose from -grey, green, red and blue-, one of its main attractions will be its price, which the manufacturer says starts at 7,990 euros.

As far as its technical specifications are concerned, although the final production version has been slightly scaled back from what was announced initially, the NIU RQi remains an enormously attractive option for anyone who wants to get into motorcycling by opting for a model with an electric propulsion system.

This is what NIU offers with the RQi

With an electric motor producing 7,500 watts of power and a considerable torque reaching 450 Nm, the NIU RQi is a fast and agile motorcycle that will leave everyone behind at the traffic lights as it is capable of reaching 50 km/h from a standstill in just 2.9 seconds. Its top speed, on the other hand, has been set by the manufacturer at 110 km/h.

As far as energy storage is concerned, the Chinese manufacturer announces the availability not of one, but of two batteries, rated at 32 amp-hours at 72 volts, which will allow it to cover around 200 km per charge. A range more than sufficient in most cases for the uses this type of motorcycle is normally put to.

NIU also refers to some other elements of the RQi, such as the Pirelli tyres it fits or the Brembo brake calipers that allow rapid deceleration, thanks also to the dual-channel ABS system it features. The Chinese manufacturer also highlights its advanced traction control system, absolutely necessary for safe riding given its high torque.

A full-LED lighting system, keyless start, GPS tracking or the cameras integrated into both the front and rear of the motorcycle to improve its safety are some other technological features that future owners of the NIU RQi in Europe will soon enjoy.
