Opel Zafira Life: the new generation of the German MPV arrives

Opel Zafira Life, the new generation of the MPV, will be presented at the Brussels Motor Show, although its arrival on the market date is not yet known.

The German brand’s MPV receives its fourth, all-new generation: Opel Zafira Life. Included in the PACE! plan, this renewal will offer innovations in interior and exterior design, connectivity and safety. Its official debut will take place during the Brussels Motor Show in mid-January. Although orders can be placed during the first quarter of 2019, the market arrival date is unknown. Furthermore, Opel has confirmed the production of a fully electric version of the MPV, which would arrive by 2021.

The new Opel Zafira Life offers a generous interior space

Regarding its exterior design, this new generation of the German MPV will come in three different sizes. The smallest version, called Zafira Life “S”, will be around 10 centimetres shorter (4.60 metres) than the current model. The other two versions (Zafira Life “M” –4.95 metres– and Zafira Life “L” –5.30 metres–) will be 65 and 95 centimetres longer respectively. Likewise, this renewed model does not exceed 1.90 metres in height, allowing it to access underground car parks without any problem.

As for the interior, the fitting of a two-piece panoramic roof provides a greater sense of space. This renewal includes electrically operated sliding side doors activated by a foot movement or the ability to open the rear tailgate window. Furthermore, its passenger capacity increases to nine people, while still offering generous interior space.

Similarly, the greater legroom in the rear seats for the “M” and “L” versions stands out. Likewise, the “lounge” version enhances this sense of freedom and space. This trim features a movable table, the ability to swivel the seats or 230 V sockets in the rear rows. In addition, the front seats will feature electric heating and the option to provide massage.

Finally, the interior equipment of the fourth generation MPV offers up to eight leather upholstery configurations for the seats. Likewise, these can be easily adjusted and folded down to increase cargo capacity. This will allow over three tonnes (almost 3,400 litres) by removing all passenger seats. If only the last row is removed, capacity will be reduced to 1,500 litres.

Opel Connect and safety aids

The new Opel Zafira Life will receive new connectivity and safety-related technology for its users. The German MPV will feature the Opel Connect service offering roadside assistance and real-time traffic information. Furthermore, this model will feature four-wheel drive, which can be controlled via the IntelliGrip system. In addition, the Zafira Life stands out for having earned the five-star rating in the Euro NCAP safety test.

These are not the only safety innovations. The front and rear bumpers feature radar sensors to warn the driver in the event of a collision. Users will also have a rear-view camera, displaying the image on the interior mirror or the infotainment screen. It is also worth noting that the on-screen image will offer “180° bird’s-eye view visibility”.

Driving aids using cameras and radars

Regarding driving assistance, the MPV is fitted with a camera and a radar at the front of the vehicle. In this way, it detects pedestrians and performs an emergency stop thanks to the automatic emergency braking system. Likewise, the driver can “adjust” the vehicle’s speed relative to the one ahead thanks to cruise control. In the event of a possible impact, the speed could be reduced to “20 km/h if necessary”.

Other functions include assistance to prevent lane departure, a system that alerts “for drowsiness” and an automatic lighting system. The latter switches on automatically from speeds above 25 km/h. Finally, users can view the speed, distance to another vehicle or trip information on the instrument cluster.

Infotainment system compatible with smartphones

Finally, the infotainment system features a 7-inch screen (17.7 centimetres) and the Navi multimedia system. Compatible with mobile devices, it installs Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to connect your smartphone. Furthermore, the navigation system will display 3D views with “Full HD” quality for “points of interest” in major cities.
