Porsche extends its commitment to Formula E

The Porsche single-seaters will continue competing in Formula E for at least four more years. This makes it clear that the company’s involvement in this competition has been a very positive experience.

Porsche has decided to once again extend its participation in Formula E. This means the Stuttgart-based firm will maintain its involvement in the competition beyond the thirteenth season, starting in 2026, when the fourth generation of its single-seater will debut. Porsche began its participation in Formula E in 2019, with an initial five-year commitment until the 2023/2024 season. However, last summer it announced that it would continue competing for two more years until the end of 2026.

Although the company has not specified how long it plans to keep participating in Formula E, developing the fourth generation of its single-seater will only be profitable if its involvement in this competition continues for several years. In this regard, some experts believe it is likely that we will keep seeing Porsche’s single-seaters in Formula E at least until the fifteenth season, if not longer.

The new regulations applicable to the future fourth generation of Formula E single-seaters appear to be the main reason that has led Porsche to extend its commitment to this competition. With this fourth generation of vehicles, manufacturers will enjoy greater freedom in their development, and all the knowledge acquired in this process can be transferred to their series production models, making them much more competitive.

Important changes are coming to Formula E in the coming years

The current third-generation single-seaters have a power output of 350 kW, set as the maximum limit. If a single-seater exceeds this power, even if only momentarily, it receives a penalty during the race. Manufacturers develop the motors, inverters, software and rear suspension at their own cost and risk. Meanwhile, the battery and the electric drive unit located on the front axle, which currently is only used for energy recovery, are standardised components.

From the next season, with the Gen3 Evo, this drive unit will also be occasionally used for propulsion; but it will be the fourth generation of single-seaters that represents a much greater leap forward. Propulsion power will then increase to 600 kW, with the possibility of recovering energy up to 700 kW.

In relation to this matter, Michael Steiner, member of the Executive Board for Research and Development at Porsche AG, has stated that the company had clearly understood from the outset that its commitment to Formula E would be long-term. According to him, Porsche’s participation in Formula E in recent years has been very positive for the company, as it has allowed it to accumulate new knowledge that it has subsequently been able to apply to the sports cars enjoyed by its customers. “Looking ahead, we want this to continue to be the case,” he concluded.

For his part, Jeff Dodds, the current head of Formula E, has celebrated the unwavering commitment and innovative spirit of Porsche, which will lead it to maintain its involvement in this competition for at least four more years.
