Proposals would ban the use of fossil-fuel vehicles in Great Britain from 2040

Banning the use of all types of vehicles powered by petrol or diesel engines is not the stuff of science fiction, but could become a reality within a few years. I imagine that in a hypothetical futuristic scenario where this idea succeeded, it could spread like wildfire to the rest of the countries, but don’t panic, because for now it is only an internal proposal of Britain’s Liberal Democrat party.

British Liberals will propose banning the use of all vehicles that are not hybrid or electric, that have not reached zero emissions. This ban would take effect from 2040. But besides the fact that several years remain before this becomes a reality, the proposal would not be put to a vote at the level of the English government, but will be voted on internally.

If approved within the Lib Dems, it will not yet become law. It will be one of the pillars on which they will build their political campaigns for the coming years, which will undoubtedly attract many people more inclined towards alternative energies and environmental care.

Imagine what it would cause today for a country to pass a law similar to the British Liberal proposal, given the economic, political and financial power that oil companies still have. Eventually, the day will come when not a single petrol or diesel vehicle is left on the streets, but it seems this moment will come well beyond 2040.
