Renault Next Two: the electric and autonomous proposal for 2020

Autonomous cars are advancing by leaps and bounds, from those timid attempts on experimental units about five years ago. The initiative is no longer limited to universities and technology companies, but has also reached car manufacturers. Renault has been the first to bet on this type of vehicle with the Next Two, which, to be clear, is also electric.

The engineering department of Renault has unveiled the Next Two under the premise of being the next autonomous car of 2020, which will link connectivity with the delegation of certain driving tasks, giving drivers more free time while also increasing safety.

The Next Two’s autonomous system works as follows: through a sensor in the front bumper and a camera mounted at the base of the interior rear-view mirror, the car takes control of driving in congested traffic and when the speed does not exceed 30 km/h. It can also park by itself, a task that includes finding a suitable parking space and carrying out the entire manoeuvre on its own.

Technology is an extremely important part of the Next Two, as it will feature connectivity with 3G, 4G, Hotspot, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi networks compatible with the Android, iOS and Windows 8 operating systems. In addition, a HUD has been incorporated so that the driver can connect and carry out some basic network functions while the car drives itself.

For now, we are still some way from this prototype becoming a production project. We make do with a demonstration video, in which Carlos Ghosn himself shows us the qualities of this Next Two in its experimental phases.
