Renting and leasing, do you know the differences?
If you are thinking of renewing your car, there are many options available, including ‘leasing’ and ‘renting’, which are similar but have differences.

If you need a new car, you may be wondering whether it is better to own a car outright or to opt for another option to get one. There are two options that may interest you, so we are going to tell you about them. These are renting and leasing, two vehicle rental models that, although they seem the same, have some differences. To learn more about each of these options, we explain what each of them consists of.
These two car rental arrangements allow you to enjoy the car for a limited time and, at the end of the contract, one of them allows you to acquire the car outright for a residual value. Let us see how each of them works and which one is more suitable for the user.

Renting
Renting allows you to hire a car for a set period of time. Both private individuals, self-employed workers and companies can opt for this type of vehicle rental contract. One of the main features of this type of vehicle rental contract is that there is no minimum duration, although it is normally extended up to a total of 60 months.
Another of its features is that ownership and title belong to the renting company, not to the user. This means that the company is the owner and is responsible for all the costs that the vehicle incurs. This is very practical, because thanks to this, all those costs are included in the monthly fee.

This fee includes the costs involved in using and enjoying the car, such as insurance, roadside assistance, registration, taxes, preventive maintenance and mechanical repairs, tyre changes, booking service at workshops, fine management and some others that the lessee has grouped under a single fee.
As it is a rental, for a self-employed worker or a company it is recorded as an expense and can be deducted from the company’s accounts. In addition, it offers more convenience, since everything related to managing the car is handled by the leasing company and the user only needs to worry about fuel and, in any case, breakdowns or accidents not covered by the contract.
Leasing
Leasing is similar to renting, but it has some differences that should be known. For example, the fee only covers the financing of the car and not the associated costs. That is, insurance, maintenance and other expenses are the user’s responsibility. The contract period starts at two years, which is the minimum that can be contracted, and at its end the user has the option to buy the car outright by paying the residual value or to contract another one.
In the case of leasing, it is not an expense but an investment and must be recorded as an asset owned by the company.
The differences between leasing and renting are considerable, and you must make sure which one is most suitable in each case. The first option is probably more beneficial for a company, since a single fee covers everything. But, as always, each case is different and you must consider which is most appropriate in each circumstance.
