Return trip: this is how children should travel in the car

This August, millions of trips will be made during the summer holidays, and it is worth recalling how children must travel safely

The end of the summer holidays has arrived for many Spaniards, so it’s time to head back home. Many will do so by car, and among them, there will be children who will occupy the rear seats of the car. Fortunately, the days when the youngest travelled loose and unprotected in the car are long gone. But it is worth recalling how children must travel in the car, including during the return journey back to routine.

Children must always travel with a Child Restraint System, the popular child seats. But not just any of them will do. Each age requires a different type of child seat, adapted to the characteristics of each little one. Normally, the distinction is not made by age but by weight. Seats start at a very light weight and end up being devices that raise the little ones so that they can be secured with the vehicle’s standard seat belt.

Child restraint systems should preferably be fitted in the rear seats. In the back row, the best position is the centre seat, as it offers more protection against side impacts. However, they can also go on either side as long as there is an approved anchoring system compatible with the child seat.

If the child seat is to be fitted in the front, remember to deactivate the airbag for that seat. In the event of a collision, it may deploy and cause serious injuries to the baby.

As for the positioning of the child seat, it should be remembered that it is recommended to install it facing backwards until 15 months. However, some road safety experts advise that this period extend up to four years of age. Even when placed on the rear seat, the child restraint system should be in the rear-facing position to improve safety.

Of course, parental supervision is essential to ensure that the journey is as safe as possible. It is advisable that there be no items that could pose a risk in the event of a collision or sudden deceleration. Nothing should be placed on the rear parcel shelf either, as it can be thrown towards the baby and cause injury. The area must be kept clear of loose objects.

This includes feeding bottles and water bottles, which, although they may calm the child, can become a hazard in the event of sudden braking or a collision. It is better to offer the child a drink when they ask for it, rather than letting them hold the bottle in their hands, to avoid risks.

A correct use of the child restraint system and the necessary care so that the child travels comfortably is important, so that there are no problems and a safe and comfortable journey can be enjoyed.
