Theft of a hacked and filmed Tesla Model S

Tesla is today considered a high-tech prestige brand, a company that offers the best and most cutting-edge electric cars in the world within its price range.

If you want to see more information about how easy it is to hack a car today, we recommend that you read this article.

However, as we will see in the video we present below, digital security is in fact much less secure than traditional physical security of the old school. Proof of this is the Tesla Model S:

The modus operandi used by the thieves to carry out their task is the most common and simplest in recent times. Nowadays, it is no longer necessary to make a hole, break a window or cause a commotion.

Now the process could not be simpler and, worst of all, it hardly attracts any attention, even leading people to think that the people with the car are its owners, basically due to ignorance.

As we can see in the video, the thieves’ execution is fast, silent and efficient. One accomplice is in charge of identifying the digital signal produced by the electronic key of the Tesla Model S. The process takes no more than 3 minutes.

This is a relatively easy task, especially if we consider that keys are usually located near the doors in homes, since it is customary to leave them in the entrance so as not to have to look for them or lose them in the morning.

Once the thief identifies the key, they clone its unique code onto a cloned key practically on the spot, using software, or rather malware, which they did not even create themselves and which they have probably obtained on the internet’s black market.

Once the original key code is entered into the cloned one, the thieves now have an exact copy of the original key without having had to enter your home, mug you or break into your car.

The next step is simply to start the car calmly, as if nothing were happening, and drive off in the small hours of the morning, giving the thief precious time to escape and gain hours of advantage over the state security forces.

Furthermore, if we consider that electric cars make no noise, it is harder to notice while you are asleep that something is wrong…

In short, if you want to protect your car, even a current one, we recommend that you continue to rely on traditional physical security.

Remember that a good steering wheel or even gearbox lock cannot be hacked and must be forced, and honestly, nowadays thieves, if they see that this is the case, may not be prepared to deal with this type of security or may simply select an easier victim that offers them greater discretion and easy execution.

Another way to defend yourself against this increasingly frequent type of theft is through the use of Faraday cages that block the signals of all electronic devices. If you want to learn more about this, visit this interesting article on the Top10Motor portal.
