Skoda announces the arrival of plug-in hybrids for 2019
The Skoda Superb and Kodiaq will be the first plug-in hybrids to arrive. The first 100% electric Skoda will arrive in 2020.
A new plug-in hybrid Skoda Superb will arrive in 2019 with the aim of boosting electrification at the Czech company. In 2020 we will also see the arrival of the first 100% electric Skoda.
The Czech brand has announced that its hybrid models will adopt the electric technology of the Volkswagen group. Specifically, the Skoda Superb will use the technology of the Volkswagen Passat GTE as its basis. Other models coming later, such as a seven-seat SUV, will incorporate the same hybrid technology.
“We will start with the Superb since it has a huge following in China, which is where we anticipate greater demand from our customers. Some will say we are late to the hybrid market, but we see 2019 as the point at which demand for these cars will be strong enough to lower production costs,” said brand chief Bernhard Maier during the launch of the Skoda Kodiaq.
“As a brand, Skoda doesn’t need to be first to market, it needs to offer a technology at a price people can afford. This is why our electrification target is 2019,” Maier added.
Skoda has also announced the arrival of a 100% electric car for 2020. This model will follow the same strategy as the VW ID concept. It will be built on the same MEB (Modular Electric Base) production platform, although the design will be handled by Skoda.
