Skoda Superb PHEV is now priced: is it worth it?
The new flagship of Skoda kicks off its sales by announcing its prices according to trim levels
Presented recently, the new Skoda SUPERB iV is the plug-in hybrid variant of the top-of-the-range model from Skoda. A car that comes to offer the most efficient option for a flagship model, broadly speaking, and which, given its price, can be a great buying choice both for those looking for a sizeable saloon and for those wanting a high-capacity estate, with correct quality and interior space at a more than attractive price.
This plug-in hybrid car is offered as a 5-door saloon or estate body. The difference in storage is determined by the electric battery fitted to this car. That is why the Skoda Superb iV saloon has a boot volume of 485 litres, while the estate version rises to 510 L.
As for the energy storage, the electrical system has a 13 kWh battery which allows it to cover up to 55 km in electric mode without consuming petrol or emitting any kind of gases from burning fuel.
Battery charging takes 2 hours and a half, provided it is done at a fast charger, or 5 hours if using a 230 V domestic power socket.
Compared with the equivalent version without a battery, the weight of the plug-in hybrid car increases by 135 kg. This undoubtedly affects the dynamic capability of a car whose combustion engine is the 1.4 TSI with 156 CV, combined with an electric motor of 85 kW (equivalent to 115.5 CV) which, in total, produces 218 CV and 400 Nm of torque, more than enough to be among the best cars for towing a caravan.
The gearbox that handles the power generated by the drivetrain is a 6-speed DSG automatic transmission.
Equipment of the Skoda Superb iV
The trim levels available are Finish Business, Ambition, Style, L&K and SportLine.
In any case, it features elements specific to and necessary for a plug-in hybrid car, such as the Amundsen infotainment system with exclusive functions visible and controlled via the touchscreen, which measures 20.32 centimetres as standard, or 23.37 in the case of the premium Columbus which, in addition, is equipped with the Virtual Cockpit behind the steering wheel, replacing the traditional analogue dials.
Two USB ports are also fitted, an integrated eSIM to facilitate connectivity of the system, and Bluetooth. As an optional extra, a sound system with 11 speakers can be specified.
With the Smartlink+ system it is possible to connect the user’s smartphone to the infotainment system, provided it is done via Apple CarPlay, Android Auto or MirrorLink.
This network card allows external interaction through the Skoda Connect Online Services system, which facilitates navigation and online services.
The Skoda Superb iV also features telematic remote access technology that gives the user access to car data through the mobile phone app, such as checking the current state of battery charge or switching on the air conditioning before starting a journey.
And once you are on the move, outside visibility is no problem thanks to the Matrix adaptive lights with Full LED headlights, which adapt the car’s lighting to the driving situation in the L&K and SportLine trims.
The rear, besides looking much more elegant, as is fitting for a car like this, also features, on the same trims, Full LED rear lights with dynamic indicators. On the Skoda Superb iV Ambition or Style, the LED rear position, brake and fog lights are standard.
Prices by equipment of the Skoda Superb iV
As is customary, having an electrical, rechargeable system that reduces petrol consumption and polluting emissions entails an additional cost compared with the equivalent version with traditional engines.
When comparing engines, the difference between the cheapest version with a petrol engine and the rechargeable hybrid, marketed in this case as the Skoda Superb iV Finish Business, is 8,000 euros.
For the start of sales, the prices of the Skoda Superb iV by trim level are as follows:
| Skoda Superb iV | Price |
| Skoda Superb iV Finish Business | 39,950 euros |
| Skoda Superb iV Style | 43,350 euros |
| Skoda Superb iV Sportline | 46,450 euros |
| Skoda Superb iV L&K | 50,350 euros |
However, the price of the Skoda Superb iV Ambition, including the campaigns and the financing discounts from Volkswagen Finance, starts at an interesting 31,900 euros for the three-box saloon body and 33,100 euros if the Combi estate is chosen.
Without a doubt, in any of its trims, this car stands out as a very sound buying option when it comes to the group of self-charging or rechargeable hybrid cars about 5 metres long.
