Skoda will unveil a new SUV at the Geneva Motor Show

The world will receive a new SUV from Skoda at the end of this winter. A new urban crossover

The transverse modular platform of the Volkswagen Group, known by its acronym MQB, offers a great deal of flexibility, so much so that new products are constantly being “born” from it, for and within the different brands that make up this giant. In this case we are talking about a new SUV from Skoda. A crossover to add to the list of Skoda crossovers.

And so, following Skoda‘s pattern of previewing its upcoming models through brief pieces of information accompanied by some kind of image, although the colleagues at Auto Express have offered a gallery of the car which they claim will be the definitive version, we now know that the new SUV from Skoda is already in the pre-launch phase before its commercialisation.

Nuevo Skoda SUV compacto basado en el concepto del Vision X

With the Vision X concept, Skoda already gave us a preview of what its future SUV in this category could look like.

This new SUV from Skoda apparently already has a name: Skoda Kosmiq. A name not yet confirmed, but which would join the other two K’s in the Czech brand’s SUV range: Kodiaq and Karoq and, now, the new Skoda Kosmiq. A name registered at the Czech Republic’s patent office, which suggests it will be the one given to this new car.

Skoda Kosmiq, the cousin of the Seat Arona

As we mentioned, the modular architecture of Volkswagen’s MQB platform makes it possible to build a large number of vehicles, some similar and some quite different. That is why this new SUV from Skoda is related to several models from other brands.

For example, and without going any further, it is the same platform that gives life to the Seat Arona and the new Volkswagen T-Cross, two compact urban crossovers, one already established and the other eager to take its share of the SUV sales pie.

The new SUV from Skoda will have to fight against its relatives and against other rivals from Asia, such as the second generation of the Nissan Juke or the popular Toyota C-HR.

Skoda Kosmiq, with petrol and diesel engines… for now

Therefore, the engines of the Skoda Kosmiq will be two petrol TSI units: the three-cylinder 1.0-litre with 100 and 120 CV and also the four-cylinder 1.5-litre with 150 CV; and for the diesel Skoda Kosmiq, the 1.6-litre engine with 115 CV will remain. Although this is not confirmed, the new SUV from Skoda could be one of the electrified vehicles for 2020 that the manufacturer plans to offer, 9 of which will be battery electric cars or hybrid cars.

Likewise, it will feature a new layout for the front lights, taking as the basis for its image the Skoda Vision X prototype from 2018. That vehicle showed headlights and daytime running lights split into two independent light units. This concept car may also have anticipated the electrification of the new SUV from Skoda, since that show vehicle had a 1.5 turbo engine and two electric motors capable of driving up to 2 km of range in 100% EV mode.

World premiere of the new SUV from Skoda in March

The world premiere of this car will take place at the next Geneva Motor Show 2019, an event that will open its doors from 5 to 19 March. It is there that we will learn more about this new SUV from Skoda, although we expect that, well before then, we will know important aspects of it, such as its final name and its market launch. As we indicated, everything points to the Skoda Kosmiq being in dealerships before the end of this year.

For now we can only enjoy this new teaser and base ourselves on the images of the Vision X concept to get an idea of the design. What is clear, however, is that it looks very promising.
