The United States Air Force commissioned the development and construction of two custom cars with the technology of the military organisation from the Californian manufacturer Galpin Auto Sports.

The initiative was taken by the air force with the aim of encouraging young Americans to enlist, and it is only one of the alternatives that will be used to persuade potential recruits.

A Ford Mustang and a Dodge Challenger were tuned with exterior features similar to the other customisations carried out by other companies, but the interior is another matter, since the influence of the air force is impressive.

The interior of the so-called X-1 Mustang simulates the cockpit of a combat jet, with an ejection seat and an instrument panel typical of that type of aircraft.

By contrast, the Vapor Challenger has two seats and a second steering wheel for the co-pilot. It also features a stealth mode built into the exhaust system. Other features that set it apart from the other prototype include an air intake on the bonnet, carbon fibre wheels, proximity sensors and a 360-degree camera with a range of 1.6 kilometres.

The cars belonging to the The 2009 Super Car Tour will first visit secondary schools and then appear at a series of events organised by the air force’s sponsors.
