The A8 will have the option of acting as a Wi-Fi hotspot

Not long ago we told you how Audi and Qualcomm were considering adding the possibility for some of their vehicles, specifically in the premium segment where the Audi A8 sits, to be turned into a Wi-Fi hotspot, that is, allowing several devices to connect to the internet through it.

Well, from Gizig our colleagues confirm that in 2011 Audi will already start offering this new extra. Naturally it will only be an optional extra, but if we decide to include it we will have the possibility of inserting a SIM card into the car and letting up to 8 devices connect to the vehicle at speeds of up to 7.2 Mbps.

The Wi-Fi antenna will be located beneath the car’s radio antenna, and we will no longer be limited to downloading certain useful information as was originally conceived in the past, such as traffic, roadworks or weather information, but we will be able to browse anything our mobile operator allows.

In Spain, mobile internet is still not fully established although progress towards it is moving quickly. This Audi extra is a perfect example of this advance, and we hope that in a few years it will be something more or less everyday in the most commercial vehicles.
