The Aion Hyper GT 2023 claims its aerodynamic record

The Chinese car manufacturer Aion unveiled its new Hyper GT at the 2022 Guangzhou Auto Show, claiming a record-breaking drag coefficient of 0.19 for the liftback-style saloon. Set for sale in China by the end of 2023, the four-door electric car will become the second model from the electric car sub-brand.

The price has not yet been announced, although Aion employees hint that the Hyper GT will compete with the XPENG P7 and Hozon S with a starting price of around 36,000 euros in China. The styling of the new saloon is based on what Aion describes as its “wind and water” design lineage, first seen on the Hyper SSR. The smooth surface is combined with rounded shapes and flush door handles to create an aerodynamic exterior.

Other features include active air ducts within the lower section of the front bumper and an active rear spoiler measuring 1,465 mm wide. Aion says the scissor-opening front doors, which open at an angle of up to 43 degrees and provide a 573 mm wide opening, will be retained for the definitive production Hyper GT, which is claimed to have a drag coefficient of 0.19.

If verified, this would make it more aerodynamically efficient than the Mercedes-Benz EQS, which has an official drag coefficient of 0.20. It would also improve on the 0.208 drag coefficient claimed for the Tesla Model S.

The power of the Hyper GT, which is based on Aion’s new AEP 3.0 electric car platform, comes from a rear-mounted electric motor. Aion claims a 0 to 100 km/h time of 4.0 seconds, but is holding back on battery and range details until closer to the introduction of the Hyper GT on the Chinese market in the second half of 2023.
