The auction of this authentic 1938

mercedes-320-cabriolet-1938-1If you like history and cars, you probably like the history of cars, but also cars with history. Am I wrong? The car in these pictures has a great deal of history behind it, and not only because it was produced almost 80 years ago, which it was too, but because of who it belonged to.

This is a Mercedes 320 Cabriolet B. Only 34 units of this convertible model were built, and one of them, the one we see in the pictures, was produced at the Mercedes factory in Mannheim.

Under its hood is a 6-cylinder, 3.4-litre engine, which could propel this protagonist up to 140 km/h, a very noteworthy speed considering it weighs 2,050 kilos.

The model’s exclusivity and its condition can generate a great deal of interest among collectors who want to bid for it, but the fact that it belonged to a person in the Nazi army during the Second World War adds even more intrigue. It should also be added that its owner suffered an assassination attempt that ended his life precisely while he was driving this beautiful Mercedes 320 Cabriolet B.

His name was Reinhard Heydrich, and he was an SS officer, a person very close to Adolf Hitler. The attack that took Heydrich’s life a few days later took place in Prague on May 27, 1942, and, as you can imagine, the car was seriously damaged.

Besides the damage caused by the attack, the Mercedes in question here disappeared for several decades and was found in 1980 in a barn in a fairly poor state of preservation.

It later underwent a slow and meticulous restoration process to bring it back to life and make it look as a vehicle this exclusive and with such a striking history should look. Once all the work of recovering the vehicle was completed, it has been used on many occasions for filming various movies set in that period.

It will be auctioned in Denmark on June 26, and we are very sure its price will be very, very high.
