The Australian army orders 1,200 Clase G from Mercedes

The Mercedes Clase G is still in top form. Not only was one of the main winners at the Off-Road magazine awards gala: its image as a pure, tough and solid off-roader is now reinforced by the order of 1,200 units (somewhat modified, it must be said) for the Australian army.

Half of the vehicles will feature the classic four-wheel drive, while the other half will be built with a three-axle chassis and 6×6 all-wheel drive. Now all that’s missing is for Mercedes to get into mass production of 6×6 off-roaders; I’d love to see one of these vehicles parked on European streets.

The engine will be derived from the G 350 CDI variant, equipped with a 3.0 V6 turbodiesel engine that delivers a maximum output of 224 CV and a torque of 540 Nm from 1,600 rpm, no less. The cabins will obviously be heavily modified, as we can see in the attached images.

The maintenance contract is also army-sized: it will last 30 years. For Australia’s vast desert plains these vehicles are a perfect fit. Reliability from the Mercedes with an unbreakable look based on one of the most acclaimed off-roaders of the last thirty years. The question is: how much do these beasts cost?
