The CUPRA e-Racer, pioneer of the E TCR world championship

CUPRA will be able to put its e-Racer into action, the brand’s first electric model. This will be possible thanks to the development of the E TCR championship in 2019.

The motorsport world has also been addressed by the novelties of this edition of the Geneva Motor Show, where we were able to see various models designed for racing. The CUPRA e-Racer was presented as a clear example that the Spanish company intends to fully enter a new type of championship and, to do so, it has created an electric variant of the compact. However, this is not the only thing CUPRA has developed, since the new e-Racer has been the pioneer of a new racing discipline, known as E TCR.

Let’s recall that CUPRA was unveiled as a brand independent of SEAT but that still maintains many elements in common and, at the same time, we find one great difference, the tuning of its models. As we saw not long ago, the sporty variants of the Spanish company now fall under the exclusive responsibility of CUPRA, and with this premise they have developed the e-Racer, a race car that derives directly from the León.

The most interesting thing about this new model is that it uses a fully electric powertrain, which has made possible the development of a TCR championship for models that forgo the combustion engine. To reach this point, CUPRA has worked hard on this project, which not only receives advanced mechanics, but also styling that matches everything this new model entails.

The first thing that catches the eye of the e-Racer is the powerful rear wing, which will prevent the wind from slowing down the most radical compact ever created by the brand. At the same time, both the front splitter and the rear diffuser join forces to accomplish the same mission entrusted to the wing but, as we have already mentioned, the most interesting part is found in the innards of the electric CUPRA.

Two electric motors located on the rear axle of the e-Racer are responsible for delivering up to 680 CV of power, a figure far higher than that of any combustion model of the brand. However, there is a weight increase of 400 kg compared to the petrol TCR; even so, it is not an obstacle to reaching 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.2 seconds, a time that surpasses that of many supercars.

Without a doubt, these numbers awaken our desire to see these vehicles in action, but we will have to wait until 2019, the date on which the E TCR will begin. Meanwhile, other competing brands will gradually reveal new creations, with the intention of making our mouths water even more.
