The electric DeLorean will cost $95,000

I still can’t quite see the point of bringing the (admittedly glorious) DeLorean DMC-12 back into the spotlight, unless it’s to catch the eye of some geek who has become a fashionable admirer of electric cars. When the DeLorean was sold, it wasn’t exactly spectacular, hampered by its somewhat anemic Renault V6 engine mounted at the rear.

According to what has been learned so far, the project is going smoothly following the presentation at SEMA last year. The DMC-12 will be produced in collaboration with EPIC-EV, which doesn’t tell us much, except that one of the founders of the defunct company behind the Aptera has become CEO of Epic.

With an estimated output of 260 hp and a range that seems set to be 160 kilometres, this new electric DeLorean would begin sale next year at a striking price of around $95,000, roughly 70,000 euros at current exchange rates.

Let’s see, this price is considerably more than that of the best-equipped version of the Tesla S, with much larger battery capacity, at around $77,000 . The Tesla S is at least a recently designed car and, however likeable Marty McFly may be, it truly makes no sense for the DeLorean to push towards $100,000, especially considering that the same company sells restored DMC-12s for around $50,000… yet these are not “fashionable” with their petrol engine.
