The Fiat Mio Concept: a Creative Commons idea

Although still timidly, cars created under a Creative Commons license are beginning to emerge. Some will remember the Rally Fighter, a blend of off-roader and rally car, and a major company has already taken notice and launched a project to design one. The result is the Fiat Mio Concept (Fiat Concept Car III), a car designed by more than 17,000 people.

The car is already finished. It was rendered thanks to the mentors behind the idea, the virtual design team at the Centro Estilo Fiat for Latin America, and it will be presented at the São Paulo motor show in Brazil. The process of creating a car from such varied and diverse ideas from all over the world was led by Peter Fassbender, the manager of this centre.

What is interesting about the Mio Concept is perhaps not the car itself, but the entire joint design philosophy behind it. The engineers at Fiat had to piece together the puzzle of so many ideas into a coherent design that could actually be produced.

Another interesting detail is that Creative Commons grants anyone the right to use the design, even a rival brand. But perhaps Fiat isn’t too worried that the Creative Commons licence could end up benefiting others. After all, the Fiat Mio is not an easy car to digest.
