The future of Nissan in Europe runs through the United Kingdom
With the expansion of Nissan’s facilities in Sunderland and the production of three new electric models there, the Japanese manufacturer wants to give a fresh boost to the company’s transition towards electric mobility
Just as was anticipated based on the information we published only yesterday, the Japanese manufacturer has just confirmed its intention to produce three new electric models at its plant in Sunderland (England).
What has caught us by surprise, however, is Nissan’s declared willingness to build a new, large-scale plant at the same location, dedicated to the production of battery cells; this could also be followed shortly afterwards by another additional plant, in this case dedicated to the production of electric vehicles.

At Nissan they say they are very confident of being able to carry this project forward, and they consider that the production of those three electric models will require the construction of this third plant we are talking about. In case anyone is wondering, the three electric models the Japanese manufacturer is referring to are a new generation of the current LEAF, which on this occasion will reinvent itself by becoming a crossover, and the new generations of the Qashqai and the Juke.
The bond that exists between Nissan and the United Kingdom is even greater
Nissan says this project will involve a huge investment and states that the final figure could reach 3 billion pounds sterling. Close to 3.5 billion euros. The Japanese manufacturer also has the backing of the British government, which will finance part of the costs, although the proportion has not been specified.
In relation to this matter, Rishi Sunak, the current Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, has stated that the financial support his government will provide to Nissan represents an enormous vote of confidence in the UK automotive industry.

On the other hand, and with regard to the three new electric models announced by Nissan, the company has confirmed that they will be inspired by the prototypes Hyper Urban, Hiper Punk and Chill Out that were first shown in Tokyo. Nissan plans to launch 27 new electrified models by 2030, 19 of which will be fully electric. The Japanese manufacturer has also reiterated its intention to bring electric models with solid-state battery packs to market by 2028.
