The Galician Regional Police Cars

Following on from my previous post about the National Police cars, I set out to look for some information about the Galician Regional Police cars, which are hard to spot outside the Galician capital or the big cities, yet they have a sizeable fleet of vehicles, and all of them are quite varied since they are not bought in large batches but in small numbers at a time, which makes it even more interesting.

From the Coches de Policia forum, they have a large collection of photos of several of the Galician Police vehicles and I have also managed to find some more photos of the different models that serve as police cars for the Galician authorities, since one of their main tasks is escorting institutional officials or public buildings (among other duties).

The newest arrivals are the SsangYong Kyron, which have only been in service for a few years, and I have seen them on more than one occasion at some regional police station or escorting officials. Honestly they are quite impressive and make a very interesting off-road vehicle as a police car, and they are not common to see. But it is not the only SsangYong police vehicle; stepping away from the topic a little, the Xunta de Galicia also donated to the local Galician police forces several SsangYong Actyon off-roaders with the 200 Xdi turbodiesel engine of 141 CV and all-wheel drive, another model that is quite curious to see in several Galician town councils dressed as a police car (in some councils it replaces the old Patrol or Terrano).

Continuing with the regional police cars, a good batch of units of the Renault Mégane arrived in 2004, including even unmarked street cars. And within the diamond brand they also have units of the Renault Scenic serving the Galician regional police.

But without a doubt the most numerous are the Citroën models (let us remember that the factory is in Vigo), and besides the car of the President of the Xunta, which is currently a Citroën C6, the police also have Citroën C4, C5 and even the old Citroën Xsara. They also have some Nissan Terrano II, and I have even spotted some unmarked ones as well.

I hope you enjoy this short review of the different models of the Galician regional police, and I will try to gather more information about the fleets of other police forces, because especially at the local and regional level there are many curious models used as police vehicles.
