Mercedes-AMG could go on to fit electric turbochargers across most of its future production models.

Tobias Moers, head of Mercedes-AMG, has revealed that the next generation of supercars will be fitted with electric turbochargers. This statement was made during the recent New York Auto Show. The head of Mercedes-AMG pointed out that the Mercedes-AMG ONE will become the first petrol production car to feature electric turbochargers.

“There’s more to come. Wait and see. Electric turbochargers,” Tobias Moers said at the Auto Show.

Some sources have claimed that the current Mercedes-AMG range already uses some form of electrically assisted forced induction in the models that form part of the Mercedes-AMG 53 series. In these vehicles, the powertrain uses an electric compressor to spin up the turbochargers at low revs before the exhaust gases can spool the turbos, which drastically reduces what is commonly known as lag.

An extra boost of power for greater efficiency

For the time being, the German manufacturer has not released much information about this new feature that will be fitted to the new sports cars that form part of the boosted Mercedes-Benz, Mercedes-AMG family. Tobias Moers spoke about the new electric turbochargers from Mercedes-AMG and claimed that they will not only eliminate turbo delay, lag, but will also be able to generate energy that will be reused in the system once again.

The electric turbochargers that will be fitted to future Mercedes-AMG sports cars will have 80 kilowatts. “Those 80 kilowatts aren’t needed to accelerate the turbocharger, but they can be used to recover energy,” the AMG CEO added.

Tobias Moers did not confirm which model developed by Affalterbach will be the first to benefit from this new technology after the Mercedes-AMG ONE, inspired by a Formula 1 car. However, its benefits could probably mean that at some point most Mercedes-AMG models could be equipped with electric turbochargers.

The famous Mercedes-AMG Project ONE concept has become a hybrid supercar that has been renamed the Mercedes-AMG ONE. The hybrid, with over 1,000 CV, will feature electric turbochargers. The manufacturer itself has said that the name reflects the hybrid technology derived from Formula 1, but it is also intended as a statement of intent.

Although the AMG model with electric turbochargers is still in the testing phase, new details about its active aerodynamics have come to light. It features a two-stage extendable rear wing. The main aim of the design is to provide the downforce needed to keep the supercar planted to the ground when running at top speed. It is worth emphasising that it could exceed 350 km/h.

To mark its 50th anniversary, the German manufacturer has developed this model with a 1.6-litre V6 combustion engine, four electric motors and electric turbochargers. It will be capable of accelerating from 0 to 200 km/h in less than six seconds. The front of this supercar has a very aggressive look, with a sharp, low nose. In addition, the brand’s star will sit on the bonnet.

This pseudo Formula 1 two-seater features a square steering wheel, depth-adjustable pedals and carbon fibre bucket seats.
