The Mercedes-Benz G-Class returns to the past with the limited edition

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class pays tribute to its classic first generation with the limited edition Stronger Than The 1980s

If you want to buy a genuinely capable off-roader for any terrain and any circumstance today, the G-Class from Mercedes-Benz has to be one of your options. Over the years, however, the rugged German off-roader has gradually lost its aesthetic essence as it moved closer to SUVs and gained today’s comforts, all at a price that puts it beyond the reach of many buyers.

But at Mercedes they thought it would be ideal to offer a limited edition of the current G-Class with the spirit of yesteryear, of the first generation and more specifically of the legendary 280 GE, creating a limited edition called Stronger Than The 1980s that brings back the tough, spartan character it had, based on the current G-Class, which by the way was extensively redesigned just over a year ago. Only 460 units will be built for the whole world, a number that pays homage to the first-generation W 460, making it practically a collector’s vehicle.

For the G-Class Stronger Than The 1980s, future owners will be able to choose between two Manufaktur colours that were once among the paint options: Agave Green Solid and Colorado Beige Solid. Regardless of the colour chosen, there will be other changes to the interior that recall the first generation, such as the orange-coloured indicator housings or the Night Black Magno finish applied to elements such as the bumpers, the front grille, the mirror housings and the widened wheel arches, giving it a more classic and austere look. The underbody protection is also painted black.

That is not the only exterior feature, as the classic-design five-spoke wheels, which are truly beautiful, will undoubtedly also catch your eye. Another classic touch comes from the badges: the classic design of the Mercedes star, with its lettering on a blue background, returns to be fitted on the bonnet, while at the rear the brand’s original silver emblem returns with the letters “Mercedes-Benz” in black, rounded off by a spare wheel cover designed specifically for this limited edition.

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class Stronger Than The 1980s can be dressed up even further with the Professional exterior line, which adds front and rear skirts, protective grilles for the front headlights that appear darkened, off-road tyres, black-coloured badges, door handles with the Mercedes logo engraved, and a floor projection of the inscription “G – Stronger Than Time” from the mirrors. In addition, a roof rack can also be ordered as an option.

In the interior of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class Stronger Than The 1980s, the luxury and design of the current G-Class are obviously retained, but with clearly visible elements that pay tribute to the first generation, such as the upholstery used for the seats, which combines black leather with a central grey fabric section, very popular at the time. On the front door sills, the silhouette of the Schöckl mountain has been engraved, the location of the test track where the G-Class has been tested since 1979, an image that can also be seen at the base of the B-pillar.

This limited edition is rounded off with equipment that includes elements such as the multifunction steering wheel upholstered in Nappa leather, a sliding sunroof, or the Burmester 3D sound system. The final touch is the unit number located on the centre console. The Mercedes-Benz G-Class Stronger Than The 1980s can already be ordered, and it will not be available with just any of the two engines it is offered with, the G 450 d and the G 500, with a starting price above 178,000 euros.
