If a few days ago we had the chance to see a preview of the Mercedes Clase E Coupé, now we can, at last, take a closer look at the new version of this coupé that will reach dealerships around the world in the summer of next year, 2017. It will be presented at the Detroit Motor Show, but we had the opportunity to see it in detail a few weeks before that global unveiling. The car keeps the proportions typical of the Clase E, matching them with the saloon and estate that we also saw not long ago.

However, the coupé spirit comes through, seeking a similarity with the versions of this type that the Clase C, slightly smaller, and the higher-end Clase S have, with two doors and a very pronounced sporty style. In fact, its shape is very reminiscent of the former, although it retains details such as the third window at the rear, the design of the rear lights, which are slightly thinner and longer than in the former, and smoother, less accentuated lines that allow it to have a personality of its own.

Inside, it is clear that this is a model of the Clase E, because, unlike some small details that seek to differentiate this variant from the rest, the cabin design shared by all is retained. This means it has two 12.3-inch screens, one dedicated to the information panel and the other to controlling the information and entertainment system.

Compared with the version currently on the market, the Clase E Coupé has grown slightly. Specifically, it gains 123 mm in length, reaching 4,826 mm. The width is 1,860 mm, 74 mm more, and its 32 mm extra height allows it to reach 1,430 mm. The wheelbase has also grown, specifically by 113 mm, reaching 2,873 mm, which means the occupants have slightly more width and comfort.

At launch, there will be a choice of four versions. The first of them, called the E220d, will have a four-cylinder, 2.0-litre diesel engine producing 191 CV. A second version, the E200, will be powered by a unit producing 184 CV, and the third, the E300, will fit the same 2.0-litre petrol engine as the previous one, but producing 242 CV. The top of the range is the E400 4Matic, which uses a 3.0-litre biturbo V6 petrol engine, with an output of 328 CV.

From the name, we can tell that this last variant will fit all-wheel drive, while the rest send power to the rear axle. All engines come as standard with a 9G-TRONIC automatic gearbox, so power management has been designed to deliver the best performance. Mercedes announces new engines later on, so any need the potential buyer may have will be covered by a specific engine.

The Mercedes Clase E Coupé will have a good catalogue of options, so each car can be personalised and made unique.
