The new BMW M5 prepares for its arrival in 2017
The sixth generation of the BMW M5 will see its weight reduced and could reach 620 CV of power.
The sixth generation of the BMW M5 has already covered a good number of kilometres on the Nurburgring, and here we have the latest images. The M5 F90 will be announced at the end of 2017, with the first units produced from 2018.
From the images reaching us from Germany, we suspect that the 2017 M5 will keep the sportiness of its front end, as well as the four exhaust tailpipes at the rear and the widened wheel arches.
This radical M5 will see its weight reduced compared with the previous version, so the M driving experience is more than assured. The M5 F90 will mount an optimised version of the Twin Turbo V8 engine. This engine will deliver its maximum power across a wider rev range, and it is estimated it could reach 620 CV; its direct rivals sit between 550 CV and 605 CV.
As for its drivetrain, everything points to it introducing the same xDrive system found in the sportiest SUVs in the range, the X5 M and X6 M. This all-wheel-drive system sends a greater proportion of power to the rear axle, which in some way preserves the brand’s sportiness in this area. Many people are against the M versions of the brand adopting this system, but the company has admitted that there is no other way to keep increasing power while maintaining the same levels of traction. Will the new M5 xDrive be as much fun to drive as before?
