Hyundai announced today that it has chosen the next Geneva Motor Show to present the new generation of its compact SUV, ix35, the best-selling model in its entire European range. The date thus fits the launch schedule that last summer previewed, Dave Zuchowski, head of the Korean brand’s North American division.

The revamped SUV will recover the name Tucson in the Old Continent, so it will share the same first name with the other versions sold in the rest of the markets where it is marketed. However, Hyundai has not specified the reasons behind this change. It has, however, offered us a sketch to take a look at its new design. Hyundai’s head of design, Peter Schreyer, describes it as “bold, athletic and with an imposing presence.”

The drawing released by the manufacturer reveals a more striking image than that of the current ix35. It will stand out above all for the hexagonal grille combined with especially sharp front headlights, the higher waistline, the very pronounced side style line that merges with the rear lights, and a smoother roof drop.

The impression these features convey is, indeed, that of a vehicle more urban and sporty than the previous version. Besides the sketch, Hyundai has posted a video in which Schreyer explains these details, illustrating them with the design definition process. In one moment, the rear of the new Tucson can also be glimpsed, whose rear lights strongly recall those of the new i20.

The rear bumper will be marked by straight lines and a lower protective panel more voluminous than that of the ix35, which will house the exhaust outlets. Below you can watch the full video featuring Peter Schreyer:
