The new Porsche 935 gets a retro makeover
The dazzling trip back in time that Porsche has undertaken with the limited production of the 2019 Porsche 935 is dressed in period style with its personalised liveries
.
There is no doubt that the Porsche 935 has been one of the wildest and most exciting proposals the German brand has produced in recent years, especially for those of us who feel competition is something more than mere entertainment.
That is why the liveries of the 77 unique Porsche 935s that will be produced and delivered can feature legendary colours from Porsche’s history in motorsport.
There is no doubt that every Porsche product carries DNA with motorsport genes, but some especially so, such as the superb track-only proposal that interprets the legendary Porsche 935 “Moby Dick” from the late 1970s to the mid-1980s.
This number will appear on the doors of its reinvention for the 21st century, as the owners of these new race cars can choose from 7 different liveries, all of them inspired by liveries that Porsche has worn in competition.
77 units with 7 possible liveries
The possible liveries are each more beautiful and evocative than the last, from the unbeatable combination of Gulf Racing to the one that makes the colours of John Player Special its own.
The prestigious and award-winning private team Team Kremer, inseparably linked to the success of Porsche in racing and to the development of the Porsche 935 from its origins, was especially important in races, above all in the United States.
A tribute that takes its cue from sober, elegant liveries such as the aforementioned black and gold, through to more colourful ones such as the one it wore in 1977 in its assault on the Nürburgring Circuit.
Also, in its white-background livery with blue tones, the Porsche 935 set its sights on circuits as complex and thrilling as Sebring, whose 12 Hours, in its 1980 edition, were completed in the shortest time by this car.
There could be no missing a nod to the French circuit of La Sarthe and the quintessential event for racing fans, especially endurance racing, the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Although the red-and-white livery comes from the car and multiple winner Porsche 917, the adaptation to the Porsche 935’s bodywork recalls the one the Porsche 918 Spyder could also wear and, more recently, its prototype, the Porsche 917 Concept.
Also colourful and eye-catching is the red and yellow with the colours of the Italian racing-parts maker Momo, a car that did not go unnoticed in tests as demanding as the 1,000 km of Spa.
Another key event for motorsport fans is the 24 Hours of Daytona which, in its 1981 edition, saw the Porsche 935, in its evolution known as K3, win the marathon race.
These will not be all the liveries that carried great feats or performed in great seasons, but they are undoubtedly a great tribute to Porsche’s history on circuits, some of which the new Porsche 935 will once again race on.
