The new VAG Group transmission will be produced by SEAT in Spain

Seat will manufacture the new transmission for Volkswagen worldwide starting in 2019.

The Seat Componentes plant, located in El Prat de Llobregat, has acquired production of the new gearbox for the Volkswagen Group, a six-speed manual gearbox that will be used in vehicles built on the MQB A0 platform; the new Seat Ibiza 2017 will be the first model produced by the group to use this new platform. Until a few years ago, Seat was behind other brands in the VAG Group, but it now stands as one of the benchmarks thanks, among other things, to the launch of the Ateca, which was named “Best Car of the Year in Spain” and has achieved high sales volumes in our country and across Europe.

SEAT Spain’s Vice President of Production, Andreas Tostmann, has spoken very positively about the brand’s progress following the announcement that the Seat Componentes plant will produce the group’s new transmission on a global scale. “This is a recognition of the work and effort of all employees who, over recent years, have shown their determination and supported the continuous improvement of our processes at SEAT Componentes. This news is an immense source of satisfaction for all of us,” says the Vice President of Production of Seat in Spain.

Seat Componentes will begin production of the new gearbox in 2019. According to forecasts, annual production will reach 450,000 units. Between now and 2019, the plant will prepare for the installation of the new equipment. Modifications to the assembly line setup will allow the new gearbox to be manufactured at up to 1,800 units per day. The first model to incorporate this new transmission will be the upcoming Volkswagen Passat.

The Seat Componentes production plant, located in El Prat de Llobregat, is one of the facilities the Volkswagen Group operates worldwide for transmission production. Among these factories are those in Kassel (Germany), Mladá Boleslav and Vrchlabí (Czech Republic), Córdoba (Argentina), in addition to four plants located in China (Tianjin, Dalian, Changchun and Anting). Currently, SEAT Componentes has an annual production of close to 650,000 gearboxes, a figure that will reach 800,000 units once the new contract is added; if expectations are met, the Seat Componentes plant would reach its maximum production capacity. The centre employs more than 1,000 staff and exports 70% of its output outside our borders.
