The Nissan Ariya, ready to go from the North Pole to the South Pole

This Nissan Ariya is about to embark on a great adventure: to travel from the North Pole to the South Pole, crossing America and overcoming many difficult challenges.

About a year ago, it was announced that the Nissan Ariya was going to take on a great adventure. No more and no less than covering the entire distance between the North Pole and the South Pole. A journey of around 27,000 kilometres that will take place over 10 months and will start in a few days. The drivers will be the adventurers Chris and Julie Ramsey, who will take the wheel of this Nissan Ariya with its standard engine and batteries but with several upgraded elements.

Upgraded and prepared for the adventure, because they are going to subject the car to very demanding terrain. To make sure they overcome the challenge, they have placed themselves in the hands of the Icelandic tuner Artick Trucks. In this company’s workshops, elements such as the suspension and the bodywork have been modified.

The main change that can be noticed at first glance is the wheels. These are now BF Goodrich All-Terrain T/A tyres with a diameter of 39 inches. With these wheels, the SUV has become something very similar to a monster truck, capable of tackling any type of terrain it has to cross.

The Nissan Ariya features a 87 kWh battery pack, which powers two electric motors, one on each axle. This battery provides a range of 400 kilometres, although with the added weight, the car is expected to be unable to travel more than 350 kilometres. To ensure it can be charged even in the most remote locations, the car has been equipped with a portable charging station.

This consists of a set of solar panels and a portable wind generator. This system is not expected to allow very fast charging, so the car will have to stand still for long periods of time, even days, in order to build up enough capacity to move efficiently.

This adventure, which will set off from the magnetic North Pole to the magnetic South Pole, is believed to cover the whole of North America, Central America and South America, until reaching Antarctica and the magnetic South Pole. To do so, they will have to ship the car across several areas. In some parts of South America no vehicle can drive, so, of course, they will have to make the leg from Argentina to Antarctica by boat.

That said, this Nissan Ariya will become the first electric car to set foot on Antarctic terrain, so it will be an achievement for the team of adventurers.
