The Tata Nano already has a rival: Bajaj RE60

Bajaj has unveiled its low-cost model, a rival to the Tata Nano, for the Indian market: the Bajaj RE60.

The Tata Nano already has more to worry about, alongside its weak sales, as another Indian company is set to enter the ultra-budget car segment with this little car called Bajaj RE60, designed for the Indian market. The RE60 comes equipped with a small two-cylinder engine, 200 cc and around 20 CV.

Don’t expect too much from such an engine, since its top speed is 70 km/h. There are electric cars that go much faster than that, which is saying a lot, but Bajaj claims it can comfortably carry four people and haul plenty of cargo if the rear seats are folded down.

Bajaj is considering offering customers additional engine variants besides the two-cylinder petrol unit; both versions with liquefied petroleum gas or natural gas engines. Clearly it is a good first powertrain option in a country with a growing (and developing) car park like India.

The less good news is that, according to what has been discussed for almost two years, Nissan-Renault may have had something to do with this vehicle, and that it could reach Europe if the Tata Nano Europe ever sets foot on European soil.

As the saying goes: if there’s a crisis, don’t let it show… From Nissan-Renault we would expect a different kind of low-cost vehicle, so we fervently hope this Bajaj never reaches Europe, nor even the Tata Nano.
